The restoration of a vintage motocyle can be a pain-staking, yet equally rewarding process. Time to roll up the sleeves and get some grease on those elbows!
Architect 'slash' designer Luca Zanaroli's stunning re-interpretation of this previously uninhabitable ruins in Morciano di Leuca (countryside Italy) is amazing example of what can be achieved with a bit of creativity and some 1800's masonary at your disposal. Cave life is alright by us!

Fish-Work is the title of an ongoing life project documenting Corey Arnold's journey as a commercial fisherman in Alaska and his travels abroad exploring fishing cultures around the world. Since 1995, Arnold's worked seasonally as a crab, salmon, cod, and halibut fisherman in Alaska. But it wasn’t until 2002 that he picked up a camera and got serious about telling the story of this unique little world.
"I have a love-hate relationship with commercial fishing. The work is often grueling and mundane, sometimes dangerous and soul crushingly repetitive. But inversely, there is beauty and freedom in the act of manual labor, surrounded by a vast and remote sea wilderness. For a fisherman, the reward is often found in the amazing stories of triumph, disaster, and pride that are brought home to the civilized world. I’ve chosen to tell my story in photographs."
We've decided to look more
closely at how a variety of architects have handled the challenges
presented by the most difficult client they will ever face. The one
client that will want to revisit the design hundreds of times, will
keep them up for nights on end, will never be completely satisfied, and
will constantly revisit any and every detail, imperfection, and design
decision: themselves.
Today we pay homage to an icon of motoring and free-spirited adventure.
The Volkswagen Type 2 was a panel van introduced in 1950 by the German automaker. Officially, it was known as the Transporter - but like the Beetle, the Type 2 received numerous nicknames worldwide, including the "microbus", "minibus", "kombi" and, due to its popularity during the counterculture movement of the 1960's, the "hippie van".
As one of the forerunners of the modern cargo and passenger vans, the
Type 2 gave rise to many competitors in the United States and Europe, yet retained a unique position within the market through it's many physical incarnations. Variants included the walk-through panel van, the high-roof camper (Westfalia), the crew-cab pickup, the flatbed truck, the Samba bus and the nippen tucket (just to name a few...),
As of January 2010[update], updated versions of the Type 2 remain in production in international markets— as a passenger van, as a cargo van, and pickup truck.
Mt Hotham is Australia's highest alpine resort, with an elevation of 1861m. Celebrating 150 years of adventure this year, the mountain is a picturesque 4.5 hour drive from Melbourne. For those so inclined, it's now also a mere 21 flight via chartered jet. For those who are ski/board orientated, Mt Hotham's abundance of snow and challenging mix of terrain should keep even the most reckless of you entertained for weeks on end.
For the more 'casual' mountain adventurer, there is also plenty of entertainment to be had in exploring over 35km of trails, with circuits ranging in length from 2km to 15km. The nearby residential enclave of Dinner Plain also serves up world-class restaurants and a Japanese-inspired spa, so why fight the winter chill in the city? Escape to the hills this weekend!
Melbourne not quite doing it for you at this time of year?
East Greenland is one of nature's last remaining unspoilt
regions on the planet. The long winter, where the sea is frozen and
the extensive field ice belt, which drifts on the currents along
the coast in the spring and summer, has resulted in East Greenland
becoming very isolated from both the rest of Greenland and indeed
the rest of the world.
With an area covering almost 1 million km2 (386,000 square miles),
the National Park in Northeast Greenland is the biggest in the
world. The area's unique wildlife and rich history have made the destination a must-visit for many adventurers. Apart
from the personnel at the meteorological stations and the
surveillance patrol, no humans live in the area
Activities during the summer include sailing trips amongst the
icebergs, helicopter flights over glaciers or the Ice Sheet,
kayaking, whale safaris and angling. The winter season provides
good opportunities for skiing, dog sledding on trips lasting from a
few hours to several days and the chance to enjoy the reflections
of the northern lights on the snow-covered, rugged mountain peaks,
which are highly characteristic of East Greenland. Skis and
snowshoes make the landscape accessible to active tourists, whilst
travellers possessing a real spirit of adventure can also acquire a
licence to drive a dogsled or take part in a trophy hunt for
muskoxen.
